Designer Tips
Accentuating with Personality and Purpose
Do you ever stand in a room of your home wondering what's missing? You may have placed the furniture just right, discovered the perfect flooring option and dressed the windows. But still, something isn't quite right?
Chances are, it's time to accentuate. You know what they say, accentuate the positive! But how? Here are a few suggestions, and uncommonly considered tips.
The more obvious suggestions include adding something whimsical. Try a settee or accent chair in a bold pattern, bright color or interesting shape. Occasional tables of all sizes and shapes are also a wonderfully functional and decorative element — especially when paired with items that are not part of the very same collection.
For added texture and color, the addition of plants and small, potted trees is an inexpensive way to bring "life" to a room. Be it real or artificial, greenery of any kind can reinforce the style of any space. Wall art, sculptures, decorative mirrors and uniquely styled table and floor lamps are design elements that, when used in conjunction with a well-designed space, provide additional enjoyment and functionality.
A classic choice that serves both personality and purpose is the use of a floor, mantle or wall clock. The clocks of today are not the clocks of your grandmother's time. In fact, modern designers such as Ty Pennington are turning heads with a more modern take on time.
Clocks serve multiple purposes and often times mark an important personal point in history: a wedding, anniversary, birth, college graduation, retirement, first home and so forth. A clock can be a conversation piece that, unlike some heirloom purchases, are not a major investment. Easy to pass down from generation to generation, clocks are timeless works of art that accentuate with visual appeal, purpose and sound.
