A Crash Course on Quality Bedroom Pieces
Contrary to popular belief, price doesn’t necessarily drive quality. Trips to the international furniture market year after year can teach you that. This is not to say quality isn’t reflected in price, more often than not it is, but even the most attractive piece made with the finest materials may not be the best in quality.
Herein lies the point: construction drives quality. This likely comes as no surprise to you. Naturally, something well constructed is considered a quality product. But, the question remains: do you know how to identify a quality made piece of furniture?
As you know, not all furniture is created equal, and you can’t possibly be expected to know the ins and outs of furniture construction. It’s not your job to. However, knowing a few key construction elements can help you become a more informed shopper.
There are many ways to piece together an armoire, a chest of drawers, or any other casegood piece.
Begin with a solid wood case; this is the foundation of any piece of quality bedroom furniture. DO NOT be concerned if some pieces feature premium grade multi-plywood. It is sturdy and very dependable! Here are a few common quality construction attributes to look for:
- Corner blocks that are glued and screwed into place to prevent racking
- Mortise and tenon construction throughout
- Framed and fitted back panels on every case
- Drawers that extend completely into the case
- Fully framed wood dust proofing between every drawer
- Wood-on-wood drawer guides with metal back braces
- English dovetail construction on the front and back of all drawers
- Graduated drawers on all cases for style and quality
